A Teacher's Handbook to Elementary Social Studies. An Inductive Approach. Revised Edition.
Taba, Hilda; And Others
A new approach to the inductively oriented elementary social studies curriculum is offered in this revised edition which describes rationale, teaching strategies and procedures, and evaluation strategies for the latter. This edition contains modification of term explanations and meanings and two new chapters covering the role of questioning and evaluation of student progress toward objectives. Emphasis is upon three aspects of curriculum design -- content, learning activities and teaching strategies stressing the theoretical basis for curriculum development. This book deals with interrelated curriculum development elements of a range of affective and cognitive objectives; how the content is selected and organized; how learning experiences are selected and organized; how teaching strategies for the development of cognitive skills and attitudes, feelings, and values and procedures implement the objectives; and what techniques may be used as a yardstick to evaluate the feedback. Certain practical examples of teaching strategies, such as how to move toward basic ideas through bite-size steps, how to assure a sequential growth in making inferences, and how to ask open-ended questions are also included. The introductory edition is described in ED 039 206. (Author/SJM)
