This book which has been appended as part of the Equal Educational Opportunity hearings of the Senate Select Committee primarily focuses on the thesis that schooling provided to an individual and his subsequent educational achievement and post-school performance are determined to a substantial degree by his social and economic circumstances. The State of Michigan was selected as the location for the study. Chapters deal with: (1) a discussion of the concept of socioeconomic status (SES), and the characteristics of the samples of schools, students, and school districts used; (2) a review of the scholarly literature on social status and school services; (3) a presentation of an analysis of the ability of school services to affect student performance; (4) an analysis of research which relates post-school performance to such topics as individual lifetime earnings, occupational choice, social mobility, political participation, and social deviance; (5) a description of the governmental arrangements and economic conditions in Michigan which determine the quality of education available to a student; and, (6) a discussion of the concept of "capital embodiment," a description of discrepancies in embodiment between high and low social class children at the time they first enter school, and a discussion of alternative strategies for delivering and financing school services. Appended are information State school finance arrangements, technical notes on data analysis, descriptions of variables, and information on SES and informal educational opportunity. (RJ)
