This study gives a general description of the phenomena by which immigrants enter Canadian society, the culture they bring with them, and the degree to which they become acculturated through Canadian institutions, namely employment, and more particularly education. Canadian society is seen as a mosaic of various ethnic and minority groups in relief to American society, which traditionally has been thought of as a melting pot. A sociological examination is made of the term culture, the cultures of the various immigrant groups, and culture conflict in society in general and in the school system in particular. The remainder of the thesis deals with: (1) language, culture, and intelligence; (2) education of new Canadians--methods, programs, and reforms; (3) a special bibliography on the methods, programs, and reforms arising from problems of educating cultural minorities; and, (4) social class and social mobility of the ethnic minorities.
