Designs in English: A Collection of Essays.
Hook, J. N.
A representative sampling of the career of one man concerned with learners, teachers and with English is presented. In "So What Good is English," is demonstrated how both language and literature play vital roles in the designs of man and in man's designs; the importance of communication is demonstrated for even the most menial tasks in life; the centrality of literature is cited for its power to help man out of a 'thing-thinking' orientation. In "English Teachers in a World We Never Made," are pointed out a few ways making language and literature available to students as vehicles for reflecting all that is 'human in humanity'. "Creativity, Tone Scope, Purpose" shows how the teacher can create the environment in which students may contribute to enlivening of their own imaginations. "Grammar(s)--A Rationale" contains a comparative discussion of several grammars with a plea for a multidimensional language program. The multidimensional approach is expanded with the suggestion that we go beyond grammar and usage in "Humanities for What?" In "Logic, Grammar, Rhetoric; A Presumptuous Essay on Their Relationship," are explored ideas of thinking, aspects of language development, and the power of making associations and differentiations within experiences. "English Language Programs for the Seventies," contains a projection through 1979. (Author/CK)
