The material in this teacher's manual is the first of three units in the first secondary grade course. (Objectives of the total program are given in ED 048 062.) Beginning with a study of man's social institution, the family, the student examines the American family today using appropriate social data. Examining the New England colonial family representative of an earlier period of time, he identifies evidence of change. Reasons for change and consequences for the family and for the larger society are analyzed and checked again with selective data. Next follow materials on another type of family organization, namely, the extended family system. Here the student is introduced to a family system in a village in North India. Using selected primary sources, including anthropological reports, slides, a film, and tape recorded interviews with residents of the village, students identify similarities and differences, the reasons for these similarities and differences, and the consequences of this type of family organization for the Indian family and society.
