Community Political Processes. Course I, Unit 3. Student's Manual.
Illinois Univ., Urbana. Social Science Curriculum Study Center.
Designed to follow "Economics: Choice Making" described in SO 003 175, this secondary teacher and student manual provides simulation exercises to approximate the processes of political decision-making on the local level. Objectives of this course of study are for students to: gain an understanding of political processes; learn analytical methods used by social scientists; analyze political issues by examining underlying reasons and consequences of positions; to empathize with other roles; and learn a style of political participation. The simulation includes three progressive stages that provide students with direct experience necessary for an operational and affective involvement in basic political and investigating processes. Students: 1) assume roles and confront issues that are designed by the author; 2) conduct interviews in the adult community and utilize this data to write role descriptions which are portrayed in the context of limited issues specified by the authors; and 3) also determine the issues to be dealt with from a questionnaire designed to identify paramount issues in the community. Each section includes formats and rules for the game. A minimum of 20 students and a maximum of 40 can play. Related documents are: ED 048 062, SO 003 169 through SO 003 175. (Author/SJM)
