Seventy-one national reports submitted for consideration at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, June, 1972, are summarized in this compilation. They mark an effort to identify major environmental problems which are international, multinational, national or more than local concern and the actions taken or proposed to deal with these problems. Collectively they contain a wealth of information, case material, on-site observations, and factual evidence regarding pollution, related social and economic problems, and reports and recommendations concerning domestic and international remedial measures. They are unique national self-studies describing environmental conditions, obstacles and management problems in relation to their own peoples, resources and future. Thus, the reports indicate not only national outlook and policy problems, but also depth of feeling, degree of awareness and moral conclusions. Cumulatively they represent a round-the-world view of the state of the environment to date. Main points of each report include: (1) kind of country, geographic location, government organization, and population; (2) main problems and distinctive considerations; (3) regional and internal ecological, environmental and cultural factors of significance; (4) policy indications; (5) recommendations for international arrangements and action; and (6) requests for international assistance.
