Mathematics Curriculum Guide, Section G.
Victoria Education Dept. (Australia).
This guide is a continuation of the series of guides starting with SE 012 723. The entire course is ungraded, but the material referred to in this guide would probably be covered in grade five or six. The concept of place value is studied more deeply using Dienes' Multiple Attribute Blocks, and used in the further development of formal algorithms. The study of fractions is continued, and decimal fractions are introduced. The commutative, associative, and distributive laws are again stressed, and used in computation and manipulation of equations. Applied number activities in length, area, volume, capacity, weight, time and money lead to greater precision in measurement and knowledge of further units, and contain a greater emphasis on calculation. The guide also contains suggestions for work on spatial relations (including nets of solids and angles) and statistics and graphs (drawing and interpretation). (MM)
