The normal duties and responsibilities of school supervisors employed in 24 selected rural West Virginia school districts were determined through descriptive research methodology, and these duties and responsibilities were evaluated in terms of their importance to the supervision function. Questionnaires were sent to 38 supervisors; 34 were returned. Of the 58 duties presented by the questionnaire, supervisors perform 44; and 34 duties were considered of major importance. Duties considered most important included curriculum planning, visitation of classrooms, supervision of instruction, dealing with instructional problems of teachers, selection of materials and resources, and making new information available to teachers. Clerical work and inventories were considered least important. It was recommended that the school supervisor role be defined through job descriptions, that inservice education for school supervisors be provided, that more attention be given to duties comprising the work-area classification, that the work load be reduced and clerical help added, and that opportunity be provided for supervisors to specialize in at least one area of study.
