An attempt to answer questions surrounding the teaching of oral communication to children is presented. In each section, a pattern is followed. First comes the presentation of an example. Second, there is an explanation of the teaching efforts which led up to this oral product. Third, the author adds comments and raises questions to help the reader in examining the decisions made by the teacher involved and in thinking about alternatives. This booklet is divided into five sections: Conversing and Discussing; Storytelling; Reporting and Making Speeches; Dramatizing; and Using Words Well. Conversation and discussion were taught in connection with all aspects of the day's program and related to all other types of language activity. Six examples of storytelling are given, each as an illustration of the way in which one teacher, in one school, with one group of children achieved results. In this book, methods of teaching reporting and making speeches are built around five examples from children. Also, three plays, developed creatively by children and captured stenographically, are given. With each of these plays comes suggestions as to how they came to be and the significance they have for teaching. Chapter 5 is built around the point of view that children should learn words through the problems they face in attempting to communicate their thoughts. (Author/CK)
