This unit is an attempt to provide students approaching draft age with a rationale for what we currently have in Selective Service, how it came about, and an opportunity to discuss options which are being offered to modify, change, and abolish the selective service concept. The purpose of the unit is not to promote the rightness or wrongness of a particular point of view, but rather to promote the position that each citizen have access to the fullest possible information regarding the draft and various options in relation to it. The outline of content suggests a range of possibilities only, and, as conceived, the unit would take about 10 days of instruction. It is the intent of the authors that students plan with teachers in developing the substance of this unit, and teachers are encouraged to orchestrate the content of the unit according to the nature of changing events and perceived needs of students. The behavioral goals and learning experiences in the instructional model draw from the content outline but do not attempt to cover every point in it.
