This study of the employment patterns of married women in relation to family composition is based on a sample of 32,500 cases from the 1960 census. Comparisons of employment rates among subpopulations and dummy variable regression techniques were used to analyze the data. Employment status, including full or part time, was compared with family characteristics, such as age of youngest child, number of children, and the presence of other relatives in the family (potential baby sitters). The study concludes that the determinants of employment of married women are numerous and complex. Much more research is needed, especially in dealing with questions requiring dynamic rather than static analysis. (BH)
