A basic assumption is that the level of conflict within and between nations will escalate over the next 50 years. Trying to "muddle through" using the tools and techniques of organized violence may yield national suicide. Therefore, complex conflict resolution skills need to be developed and used by some part of society to quell disorder before it gets out of hand. Only in the military establishment is there enough system stability to build a corps of specialists in conflict resolution. Programs to develop specialists of this kind might enhance a lagging enthusiasm for the military career. Emphasis on peaceful conflict resolution skills within the military may transform the organization and typical personalities and leave the feared authoritarian out. (Author)
