The Hill and the Valley: The Story of University College at Syracuse University through 1964.
Charters, Alexander N.
University College at Syracuse University has continued to provide the so-called traditional programs because these have been designed and modified to meet continuing types of needs. The nature of the total program has been influenced by certain factors. These ingredients include: (1) the commitment of the Chancellor to the necessity of educating everyone including adults; (2) the concurrence and support of the board of trustees, (3) the initiative of the top administrators, and (4) the provision of adequate and appropriate educational and physical facilities. The story of the growth of University College is presented. It advanced from the instruction of part-time adult students seeking undergraduate credit, to an educational philosophy and practice devoted to all adult needs. University College was the primary division of Syracuse University devoted to education for adults. It was concerned with programs designed to enhance the adult's capacity in the area of public as well as private responsibilities. Its program had the following characteristics: (1) The Chancellor and central administration indicated a commitment to adult education and recognized adults as constituting a primary clientele of the university; (2) Syracuse University had been a leader in centralizing the coordination and control of its adult education programs; and (3) The adult education program has been characterized by quality and experimentation.
