A system is presented which facilitates the selection of training media and devices based on the requirements of specific learning objectives. The system consists of the use of a set of descriptive parameters which are common to both learning objectives and media. The system allows the essential intent of learning objectives to be analyzed in terms of these parameters covering manner of presentation, instructional strategy, and desired mode of response. A profile of the requirements is matched with the characteristic/capability profile of generic media types. The generic media types include both custom engineered devices and commercially available media such as television, programed texts, models, films, audiotapes, and teaching machines. When the process leads to commercially available training devices, comparisons can be made among over 450 devices described in this report.
