A Teacher's Handbook for Study Outside the Classroom.
Brehm, Shirley A.
The many resources for learning that exist beyond the confines of the classroom provide outstanding opportunities to extend learning for students. The major purpose of this book is to help teachers use these resources. The book is not a series of recipes for taking field trips but is an aid to planning. For a teacher inexperienced in the possibilities for meaningful learning outside the classroom, the book spells out steps to make this learning most worthwhile. For the experienced teacher, the book affords a checklist of preparations and follow-up activities essential to integrated, continuous planning for good teaching. Chapter titles include "Types of Investigations Outside the Classroom,""Planning Out-of-Classroom Teaching,""Transportation for the Field Trip,""Permissions and Precautions," and "The Contribution of Resource Personnel." Possible sites for field trips and the major educational concepts associated with each are listed. Classroom follow-up and evaluation of out-of-class study are emphasized. (JH)
