This study explores the problems of selection, developing, teaching, and evaluating a course that relates music, art, and literature. The specific unit presented deals with relating poetry to music and to painting with Yevgeny Yevtushenko as the central figure. The seven parts of the unit draw on Yevtushenko's poetry and life to develop the thematic ideas in the lessons. The rationale describes the selection of material, the arrangement of the thematic parts, and the testing of the students' achievements. A fully developed program of forty-five class periods comprises the unit with questions for discussion and summary notations for the teacher's use. Included is a bibliography of sources and materials used in the course. The evaluation of the teaching methods explains the success of the course, the students' contributions, the examinations given, and the changes made. The thematic units proved to be a success when taught in the public high school and inspired both students and teacher to expand the material to a full semester. A course relating the arts fulfills a need at the secondary school level: the need for students to understand and appreciate the relationships among the arts. (Author/DB)
