The overall objective of the curriculum development project is to develop a general high school level interdisciplinary course on environment studies. This potential five to ten month course is outlined as follows: ecology, water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, population, socioeconomic implications, and resource management. The general intended learning outcomes listed are: 1) to understand the changing role of man in Canada with respect to his relationship with the ecosystem; 2) to have a better understanding of the natural and unnatural states of the environment; 3) to understand how an excess or deficiency of materials affects man and the ecosystem; 4) to understand the geographical implication of pollution with reference to physical and political boundaries; 5) to form an inquiry approach to modern simulations; 6) to develop an understanding of the need for a balance between economic and recreational needs of man; 7) to understand the attitudes of people; 8) to learn laboratory techniques applicable; 9) to understand the effect of urbanization in creating an unnatural ecosystem; and, 10) to have the student examine and develop his own value system. The course outlines, concepts, and intended outcomes are included for only the first two units on ecology and water pollution, along with a project status report and the evaluation intentions.
