Computers in Central Government Ten Years Ahead.
Her Majestys Stationery Office, London (England).
A consultant team made an independent assessment of future prospects for the field of computer use in the central government of Great Britain. They first assessed the level of use of computers at the present time in all governmental agencies. They then forecast the future computer applications which developing technology will permit. They considered the scope for the potential integration of the longer term requirements of government for computers in one comprehensive plan and pointed out what integration will mean in terms of standard codes, classifications, data formats, and terminology. In an attempt to quantify the overall computer requirements of government in the next ten years, they reviewed the staffing requirements for the projected computer facilities and the training programs necessary to meet these requirements. They also reviewed the functions and organization of the governmental agency which is responsible for promoting the use of computers in government, and they looked at the organization of data processing units within other computer-using departments. On the basis of these assessments and projections they made recommendations designed to insure orderly and effective growth in computer applications. (JY)
