Proceedings of the Western Regional Symposium on Instructional Simulations.
Zelmer, A. C. Lynn, Ed.; Zelmer, Amy M., Ed.
Eleven lectures on simulation and gaming delivered at a symposium in Western Canada are presented. Three articles concern ways of gaining knowledge about the effectiveness of the simulation method in teaching. Several articles describe the use of simulation in teaching specific areas: home economics education, agricultural engineering, and Canadian government. Other topics concern adapting a commercial simulation game for use at a 4-H camp, using simulation to help train student teachers, simulation as a tool in research, and analysis of experimental games by probability and statistics. One paper suggests that participants in games must become "literate," or aware of conventions used if the games are to be effective. Bibliographies on simulation and gaming are included. (JK)
