The readings presented here are the result of a review of numerous professional journals (dating from 1960 on), curriculum bulletins, other publications by district and county offices, and addresses and materials prepared for workshops and conferences. The materials chosen were felt to be the most significant descriptions of individualization as a general teaching strategy in terms of classroom application and day-to-day schooling. The readings are grouped into three sections: what is individualization, why individualize, and descriptions of individualized programs and practice. An essay by the editor introduces each section. Some of the contributing authors are: Robert Glaser, Paul Goodman, Dwight W. Allen, and Ashley Montagu. Some sample topics are: the quest for self, open structure learning, a climate for individuality, the gentle art of non-teaching, self-directed group work in the elementary school, and differentiating instruction for disadvantaged students.
