This study of school segregation of pupils of various socioeconomic strata in urban environments in Sweden has the following arrangement: form of the study and theoretical background; housing segregation in Malmo; starting points for the study of school segregation by socioeconomic status in Malmo; methods used in the study; the decision processes which lead to school segregation; socioeconomic quotients for headmaster divisions and schools; socioeconomic quotients for parallel classes within the same schools; the negative consequences of socially segregated schools and classrooms; and, segregation between classrooms and within. The first analysis of the distribution of pupils (ages seven through sixteen) in the comprehensive school system in Malmo revealed pronounced school segregation of pupils from various socioeconomic strata. A pilot study also suggested that the development of children in segregated schools and classrooms was influenced by their being segregated in many ways from pupils from other socioeconomic strata. These ways were judged to be negative both from the standpoint of the pupils concerned and from that of Swedish society as a whole. (Author/RJ)
