Steps that should be taken to design and implement computer-based instruction (CBI) for undergraduate science and engineering courses are outlined, and these steps are based on the experience of faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. Among the steps described are development of course material, developmental and validation testing of material, and the use of a "systems approach" in implementation. The latter includes setting up a course of instruction by following a comprehensive, orderly set of procedures and also a plan for involving other faculty. A lengthy example of such a course description outline is included here. The procedures to be followed are: introduction, objectives, project description, method of evaluation, impact on the curriculum, pedagogical strategy, current or past experience, related research, plans for information exchange, detailed budget, time phasing diagram, and application cross-reference chart. The tasks to be performed by the computer in each step of the design and implementation of the course are stressed. (JK)
