This collection of essays by filmmakers, theorists, and scholars studies the fundamental resources and processes of film expression. Essays on the image deal with elements that make an image meaningful, as well as with the subjectivity of the motion picture camera. Other key resources of film that are discussed here include the movement of the camera, manipulation of time and space, and the use of color and sound. The emphasis throughout is less on the practical techniques of filmmaking than on an appreciation of the parts which make up a film. The intention is to provide ideas about film technique and form which can furnish a framework for evaluating film and to stimulate thoughts and observations about film as art.
