Video Tape Production and Communication Techniques.
Efrein, Joel Lawrence
This step-by-step description of the process of making videotapes is divided into two parts. "The Medium" looks at the physical equipment needed for making tapes. The kinds, makes, and operational differences between videotape recorders, cameras, and microphones are distinguished to help the novice choose equipment suitable for his purpose. Production elements (lighting, set, props, graphics, and audio and visual effects) are explained. The rudiments of direction techniques, including picture framing and composition, are examined. Part two, "The Message," illustrates the process of making a videotape, from idea to finished master tape. Preproduction tasks include selection of format, writing of script, selection of talent, and choice of production equipment. Then the program is actually produced, and afterward, techniques for enhancing the artistic and technical quality of the tape are described. The appendix contains a list of videotape handling procedures, a glossary, and a comparative equipment specifications table. (JK)
