This study analyzes the effects of labor force composition on the level of frictional unemployment. Proportionally more of total unemployment falls upon new workers, which has significant implications for changes in frictional unemployment. The labor market model which was developed to show this also implies, at least indirectly, that new workers have higher turnover rates than do old workers. In analyzing international differences in unemployment percentages among the advanced nations, the study concludes that the higher U.S. rate is due more to teenage unemployment than any other single factor.
