Development of a School Attitude Questionnaire for Young Children. Appendices.
Strickland, Guy
These appendices to ED 043 919 contain the test instrument itself, which was not included with the original announcement. The Attitude to School Questionnaire (ASQ) is designed to measure first graders' attitudes toward school. ASQ is a group-administered, paper and pencil, nonverbal, paced test. The child listens to a description of a situation while looking at a series of drawings depicting the situation. He then reacts by selecting an appropriate face--happy, neutral, or unhappy. Separate forms, with appropriate drawings, are available for boys and girls. No special training or equipment is needed to administer the test. Administration is in two sessions, each of about 20-25 minutes. The teacher's script for administering the questionnaire is included as a manual of instructions. No psychometric data is reported. See ED 043 919 for a survey of the literature concerning the relationship between attitudes and achievement in the elementary school; the conclusions derived therefrom which led to the development of the ASQ; an account of the field testing of earlier forms; a discussion of the factor analysis, which yielded eight first-order factors--attitude toward school, schoolwork, non-threatening authority, authority, show and tell, peers and play, mathematics, and reading; and suggestions for further revision and research on the ASQ.
