The authors believe that in order to fully develop as an individual and an effective member of a democratic society, one must be able to intelligently evaluate a wide range of conflicting and controversial viewpoints. And it is on this crucial point that our educational system has, no doubt unintentionally, failed a large number of citizens. This book, then, is an attempt: 1) to motivate and involve students in critically examining important social issues; 2) to provide a channel for "extremist" views which are often inadequately treated in the mass media; and, 3) to reinforce the freedom of speech that is vital to a democracy. For each major socio-political issue, there is brief background material, followed by articles reflecting four points of view: Liberal, Conservative, Left, and Right. These views are not identified as such, so that the process of identification can be a valuable part of the learning experience. At the conclusion of each issue, there are thought questions for stimulating class discussions, and a bibliography for further reading. Among the issues covered in this first volume are: black power, education, U.S. foreign policy, civil liberties, American youth, and Vietnam. The accompanying Teacher's Manual provides suggested teaching methods for each issue. Among them are: panel discussions, field trips, guest speakers, socio-drama, role-playing, and simulation.
