The CAI Author/Instructor. An Introduction and Guide to the Independent Preparation of Computer-Administerable Instructional Materials in the Conversational Mode.
Meredith, J. C.
The methods described in this book are designed to allow the teacher who is unfamiliar with the technical characteristics and demands of a computer to prepare instructional materials for computer-assisted tutorial lessons. The techniques are not dependent upon the requirements of a particular CAI system, but are generalized for any system using a directed-dialog (as opposed to drill-and-practice) approach. The parameters computer-assisted instruction (CAI) imposes on the organization and expression of the instructional substance of a CAI course are discussed. Optimum methods of frame design and question design are recommended. In order to provide a good basis for individual scan design, the various types of answers a student may make are characterized. Mechanisms are suggested for ordering the student answer and the computer response in a reliable manner and for guarding against system misinterpretation of a student's response. Methods of branching, quoting, control, scoring, as well as special subroutines are also illustrated. (JY)
