This book, originally published in German in 1967, is intended to offer a detailed introductory review and discussion of psycholinguistic thought and research over the last two decades. Because it was originally directed to a German audience, the book places strong emphasis on behaviorist psychology, which has had little influence in Europe. The translator feels, therefore, that this book can, in the light of the fact that behaviorist psychology has recently fallen into disrepute in the United States, serve "to redress the balance and give the reader a renewed appreciation of the behavioristic approach to the study language," and give the American reader an appreciation of the more philosophically oriented European approach to psycholinguistics as well.
