In this study, English departments in colleges affiliated with the United Presbyterian Church (USA) were surveyed to determine the opinions of departmental chairmen on matters of faculty responsibility and training, required English courses, English programs for future English teachers and liberal arts English majors, and the general role played by the English departments in these colleges. Data were assembled from 40 colleges, 10 of these colleges were visited, and literature relating to various aspects of the English major and the role of English departments was reviewed. Some conclusions from the study were that less than half of the English faculty members held doctorates; teaching rather than research and publication was emphasized; few English departments offered or required courses in linguistics, language history, or the new grammar; and an English methods course was offered by only half the English departments training teachers of English. On the basis of findings, it was recommended that these English departments should continually evaluate and revise the number of specialized course in their curricula, offer more language study, and include innovative, experimental programs for students.
