A computer-assisted instructional module to teach educable mentally retarded students the survival skill of making change was developed in a two-year project at the University of Texas at Austin. Behavioral objectives were determined through consultation with various interested personnel, including the staff of the Vocational Training Annex at the Austin State School and the staff of the Mary Lee School of Special Education. After determining subskills by task analysis, it was determined that the ability to identify the denominations of coins and to know the proper value of each was a necessary minimal entering behavior. The IBM 1500-1800 computer system was chosen for its reliability and sophisticated terminals. A metal overlay keyboard was designed containing ten oversize keys; this allowed actual coins to be placed on the keys. Thirty-eight subjects were used, ranging in age from 12 to 30 and in IQ from 45 to 80; 21 students completed all parts of the course. Every student who completed the course improved his score from pre- to posttest, and retention appeared to be substantial. Student responses were studied as the basis for future revisions. CAI can be used successfully with the mentally retarded student; the question remaining is whether time and money should be invested in this approach. (MF)
