This is the sixth printing of a document published in 1958 to assist Southern school systems inaugurate and improve their junior high school programs. Seven chapters consider (1) the growth of preadolescents and early adolescents, and the evolvement of school programs to meet the needs of these students; (2) the basic functions and unique purposes of the junior high school; (3) suggestions for curriculum design; (4) suggestions regarding the organization and administration of the program and the principal's responsibilities as instructional leader; (5) the need to plan the program in advance of planning the facilities; (6) such problems as staffing a junior high school, teacher competencies, certification, and professional growth; and (7) matters relating to total school evaluation and the appraisal of growth toward objectives in the classroom.
