Phonological Analysis, Part One.
Grimes, Joseph E.
The present volume is intended as an introductory textbook in field analysis of unstudied languages. Chapters discuss (1) language and sound systems; (2) taxonomy and its uses; (3) characterization and breath, rhythmic, syllabic, and phonetic segments; (4) frames; (5) segments; (6) discrimination; (7) classification; (8) matching; and (9) taxonomies of sounds. Exercises and discussion questions are provided to help reinforce certain points. Until the forthcoming "Part Two" of this volume is published, the author suggests reading Chapter Two in conjunction with the Appendix of Eugene Nida's "Morphology" as an introduction to morphophonemic taxonomies. Also suggested is Dow F. Robinson's "Workbook in Phonology" as companion reading to this volume. (AMM)
