It covers three main areas of concern: (1) formal and informal procedures for diagnosing physical status, emotional and social growth, and reading potential and skills; (2) suggestions for organizing the classroom and class records, for grouping students (power, skill, and social groups), and for scheduling activities; and (3) lesson plans on listening, speaking, word recognition, writing, spelling, handwriting, and reading comprehension, appreciation, and interpretation. Additional materials include selected bibliographies for the main areas, lists of Newbery and Caldecott Medal Books, lists of poetry books and book illustrators, sources of paperback books, and the Dolch Basic Sight Word Test and List.
