A survey of 48 hospitals and extended care facilities was conducted to analyze those tasks which are performed by personnel within the medical record department and to determine the components of a medical record curriculum. In addition a survey was made of the Medical Record National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) and other experts to evaluate the performance of the medical record department function. Survey results revealed no discernible relationship between criticality, difficulty, and technical knowledge as rated by the NTAC. Also, the NTAC rated most tasks higher in difficulty than the personnel performing the tasks. There were 25 percent of the respondents who had no previous training before employment in the medical record department. A major implication for curriculum development was that it would be possible to provide vertical and lateral mobility for personnel in the medical record department by grouping tasks into educational categories and developing a progression of skills and knowledge to meet performance levels.
