Questionnaires were used to gather data from 1955-1969 industrial arts graduates and state public secondary school administrators in order to evaluate the undergraduate industrial arts program at South Dakota State University. Among the findings were: (1) 53 percent of the graduates are teaching, (2) Prevalent teaching areas are woodworking, metalworking, drafting, and electricity/electronics, in that order, (3) Low salaries and disciplinary problems are listed as reasons for leaving or not entering the profession, (4) 50 percent are working toward or have earned advanced degrees, (5) Woodworking, cabinet making, carpentry, and engineering graphics are the most valuable undergraduate courses, (6) Professional courses are of some value, (7) Science, physical education, and mathematics are the most valuable minor areas, (8) Improvements of undergraduate program are needed in electricity/electronics, plastics, and an expanded metals program, (9) Administrators favor industrial arts courses for girls, and (10) Administrators feel industrial arts teachers have problems with discipline, organizing course work, record keeping, shop maintenance, and shop finance and budgeting.
