To help students understand the processes by which they should gather, organize, and write material for an assigned theme, this book presents a series of steps for students to follow as well as some specific guidelines for composition teachers. Theme assignments, procedural steps, sample themes, and questions for classroom discussion are provided in the seven chapters which give specific instructions--(1) "The First Step: Examining the Familiar"; (2) "From Subjectivity to Objectivity"; (3) "Two Ways of Looking at People"; (4) "The Audience Responds"; (5) "Examining Events"; (6) "Defining Words"; and (7) "Controlling Tone". Included in the appendices are some comments on composition experimentation with third graders, and an analysis of four junior high school themes. (JM)
