Management Development and Program Evaluation: Partners in Promoting Managerial Effectiveness.
Kohn, Vera; Parker, Treadway C.
A study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the American Management Association (AMA) Management Course and its various units, as viewed by a sample of managers who came from one large company and who had been through the course. Courses were examined in terms of course content and presentation, and the change of attitude induced, as well as in terms of application and implementation of acquired concepts and skills. The perceptions, experiences, and attitudes of participants before, during, and immediately after attendance at the course were analyzed by questionnaires, "Time Distribution Profiles", impressions of courses recorded in respondents' notebooks, and group interviews. The reactions and experiences of 10 managers who graduated from the course between one and four years prior to data collection were obtained through interviews. The managers were generally satisfied with course structure, curriculum, and instructional techniques. The exposure to different viewpoints broadened their outlook and yielded fruitful dividends in the form of new approaches to their work. They identified the chief benefits as: increased effectiveness of job performance, fresh approaches to solving work-related problems, and better understanding of the management process. Attitude change was significant at the .05 level. (nl)
