This study concentrated on evaluating the success of the Lincoln Skills Center, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in helping trainees improve their basic education and vocational skills and then to find suitable employment. Relationships were also investigated between vocational proficiency and literacy skill levels as well as between basic education achievement and job success. An interview schedule, the Stanford Achievement Test (Advanced Form), the Fundamental Achievement Series (Form XB), skills proficiency rating forms, a Michigan Employment Security Commission training form, and a followup form were used to obtain data from 156 trainees and 121 graduates. These were among the findings and conclusions: (1) trainees with initial skills above Grade 6 level made significant gains during 12 weeks of basic education, but lower level trainees did not; (2) vocational training helped the majority, although significant gains were confined to certain courses; (3) trainees generally showed gains in job placement, job status, wages, confidence, and length of employment, and a majority held training related jobs. In terms of numbers of trainees employed, this first phase of the Center was judged successful. (author/ly)
