Intended mainly as a source book for instructors in area training programs, this handbook contains summary accounts of events illustrating problems frequently met by Americans working overseas, especially those providing technical assistance in developing nations. Examples are drawn from case studies, interviews, anthropology texts, and other sources. Three sections examine the assumption that "our way" is the natural way; cultural resistance to innovation because of differing preferences, habits of posture and movement, values and goals, social systems, power structures, and beliefs; and resistance arising from differences in climate, geography, technology, educational and scientific knowledge, and economic consequences. Other sections cover unexpected consequences of planned change; problems in communication and perception because of stereotypes, language incongruity, and other cultural differences; the need for flexible role definitions and personal adaptability; and ways of resolving problems in innovation and recipient participation. Individual items are cross-indexed by geographic areas, technical specialities, and the value assumptions involved. The document also includes 61 references. (ly)
