Agricultural Sciences Information Network Development Plan.
Interuniversity Communications Council, Bethesda, MD.
This report is the last in a series of papers prepared by EDUCOM (the Interuniversity Communications Council) whose aim was to develop a long-range plan for strengthening information communication and exchange among the libraries of the land-grant institutions and the National Agricultural Library (NAL). The role of EDUCOM was to substantiate the need for cooperative programs, identify the principal network elements, and design a workable network structure. The three basic components determined as being necessary to provide the responses and coordination desired are: a land-grant libraries component, an information analysis centers component, and a telecommunications component. It is proposed that the land-grant libraries be the nodes of the system, and the telecommunications component provide the message exchange between terminals located at both the libraries and the information centers. Also included in the report are 1) a bibliography of project papers and memoranda, 2) Appendix A, which lists the land-grant institutions and their locations, and 3) Appendix B, which describes a communications network for the NAL and the land-grant colleges.
