Junior College Board Members: Their Personal Characteristics and Attitudes Toward Junior College Functions, State of Illinois, 1968-69.
Ebbesen, James Andrew
The purpose of this research was to determine the personal characteristics of board of trustee members in the State of Illinois, their attitudes toward junior college functions, and the relationship between their personal characteristics and attitudes. Pertinent data were collected from 215 (87.8% of the potential 245) board members serving during the fall of 1968. Chi-square tests were used to determine whether differences between observed and expected responses to 27 attitudinal statements were significant. The results of the research included the conclusions that board members: represented selective portions of the society; favored the concept of the comprehensive community college; supported the concept of student-oriented colleges; and supported the involvement of instructors in curriculum development and student guidance. The following characteristics were significantly related to at least one of the attitudinal statements: years of experience on junior college boards, family income, age, educational background, sex, place of residence, political tendency, active church membership, membership in community service organizations, years of experience on public school boards, and principal occupation. The following characteristics were not significantly related to the attitudinal statements: number of children, residence in incorporated or unincorporated area, and occupational status, active or retired. Recommendations for further research were suggested. (MB)
