A Study of Kindergarten Activities for Language Development.
Cowe, Eileen Grace
A study of two public school kindergarten classes in New York City, heterogeneously grouped according to ethnic origin and social background, revealed that the maturity and fluency of the children's language varied according to the type of classroom activity in which they were engaged. From observational recordings of teacher-class interaction, it was discovered that the factors which seemed most to influence the amount and maturity of speech were adult participation with the children, the opportunity for children to speak, a concrete topic for children to discuss, the way in which the children were seated and spaced, and the arrangement of the room.
