This study purposed to develop a means of evaluating student performance in auditions for festival bands which would minimize the inconsistencies of subjective judgment. Tape recordings of student auditions were played three times to judges. During the first audition, evaluators rated students on a continuum scale with numerical divisions, and during the second audition, they rated them on a scale containing verbal descriptions of the performance characteristics. In the third session, judges heard a professional instrumentalist play the audition music and then listened to and evaluated the student's performance using the verbal score sheet. Students were ranked by their scores, and interjudge reliability measured by analysis of the rank order was significant at the .01 level of confidence. Conclusions were (1) the three scoring techniques were equally reliable for evaluating musical performance, (2) the second technique was preferred by most adjudicators, (3) the performance characteristic of musicality was the most consistent factor in determining rank order, and (4) the graphic scale evaluation concept can be used effectively to score and rank instrumentalists who audition for festival bands.
