A survey of studies on handwriting is undertaken in this research review. Sources of information on the history of handwriting from its earliest beginnings to present attitudes toward it are indicated. Also discussed are research findings on the handwriting act (hand movement, handwriting instruments, and penmanship), the handwriting product (in terms of readability and in relation to aesthetic scales), graphology, and the correlation of handwriting with other factors ranging from intelligence to sex to physical handicaps. A summary of studies in diagnosing handwriting problems and in formulating remedial work, and descriptions of current practices in teaching handwriting conclude the review. An extensive bibliography is provided. (LH)
