A Prototype System for a Computer-Based Statewide Film Library Network: A Model for Operation. Final Report.
Bidwell, Charles M.; Auricchio, Dominick
The project set out to establish an operational film scheduling network to improve service to New York State teachers using 16mm educational films. The Network is designed to serve local libraries located in Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), regional libraries, and a statewide Syracuse University Film Rental Library (SUFRL). The system proposes to refer films which are unavailable for scheduling in local libraries to a central back-up library and to revise computer programs to meet the specific needs of member libraries. In developing an operational model, the project collects data on the operation and inventory activities of BOCES and other New York film libraries and develops standard coding systems for film identification and user identification within the Network. A computerized materials network is workable and will soon become a necessity, but will not reduce operating costs. The formation of a research team to study reports, standardization of codes for member libraries within any computerized system, and the adoption of a management information system are recommended.
