A Study of Two Heterogeneous Educational-Level Groups in a Participation-Training Program of Adult Education: An Experiment in a Mental Hospital.
Geisert, Mollie McGrath
This study was to determine the extent to which the educational level of female schizophrenic patients could influence their willingness and ability to accept responsibility for self and others through a program based upon freedom of expression, active voluntary participation, knowledge and acceptance of roles and responsibilities, acceptance of self and others as unique persons, and sharing program development. The investigator acted as trainer of two groups of 11 members each in 15 one-hour sessions. These groups had mean educational levels of 12.4 and 7.5 years respectively, but were roughly homogeneous in other respects. Matched, untrained control groups completed the design. Patients were rated on a nine-point rating scale, and additional data collected from hospital records, patients' appraisals, and investigator's observations. Findings of this study tend to support the general conclusion that an adult education program of participation-training is a potentially effective technique for rehabilitating hospitalized schizophrenic patients, and that educational level does not necessarily influence the fulfillment of the need for increased willingness and ability to communicate acceptance of responsibility for self and others.
