The National Interest and the Continuing Education of Teachers of English: A Report on the State of the Profession.
National Council of Teachers of English, Champaign, IL.
Results of a survey of the continuing education of 7,417 junior- and senior-high school English teachers and 3,030 elementary-school teachers are reported in this book. Specific areas examined are teaching conditions, preservice education, continuing education, degrees earned after certification, college courses requested by teachers, attendance at professional meetings, professional reading, and incentives to encourage continuing education. In addition, the current status of the supervision of English teaching is discussed; and recommendations are made for the improvement of teacher supervision, for the contents of professional libraries for English teachers, and for immediate action in improving inservice education.
