Planning Elementary School Science Facilities.
Heldman, Lawrence John
The goal of this study was to provide information and ideas that would contribute to the improvement of elementary school science facilities. Specific purposes were to (1) examine existing facilities in a group of selected schools, (2) arrange data so that others might use it to evaluate their facilities, (3) prepare a guide that could be used in planning an elementary school science facility, and (4) suggest a list of equipment and supplies appropriate for elementary schools. Twenty schools in the New York Metropolitan region were examined. The survey included an inventory of equipment, a diagram of existing facilities, a description of the school, and a description of the science equipment purchasing procedure. Data were organized into a guide for planning an elementary school science facility. Some primary considerations include (1) at least one full-time science room should be available, and (2) it should be designed and equipped to serve the entire range of youngsters attending the school.
